Monthly Topical 5-in-1 Parasite Protection for Cats and Ferrets (5.1–9 lbs)

Product Description

Advantage Multi Topical Solution (Orange) for Cats is an FDA-licensed, prescription-only once-monthly spot-on for cats and kittens 9 weeks or older weighing 5.1 to 9 lbs. It is also the only size approved for ferrets weighing at least 2 lbs. Each 0.4 mL single-dose tube combines imidacloprid (10%) and moxidectin (1%) for 5-in-1 broad-spectrum protection. One monthly application prevents heartworm disease, kills adult fleas, prevents flea infestations, treats ear mites, and clears roundworm and hookworm infections.

Benefits

  • Heartworm Disease Prevention: Moxidectin absorbs into the body after application, delivering continuous heartworm disease protection throughout the full monthly period.
  • Kills Adult Fleas on Contact: Imidacloprid moves through the coat's natural lipid layer, taking down adult fleas on contact before they ever get the chance to bite.
  • Prevents and Treats Flea Infestations: Clears existing flea infestations and stops new ones from building up by killing fleas before egg-laying can occur.
  • Treats and Controls Ear Mites: Clears Otodectes cynotis ear mite infestations, removing the need for separate ear drops or additional treatments.
  • Treats and Controls Roundworms: Works against adult and immature adult Toxocara cati roundworms, one of the most common intestinal parasites found in cats.
  • Treats and Controls Hookworms: Tackles adult, immature adult, and fourth-stage larvae of Ancylostoma tubaeforme hookworm infections in cats.
  • Only Size Approved for Ferrets: The Orange Box is the sole Advantage Multi for Cats size cleared for use in ferrets weighing at least 2 lbs for heartworm prevention and flea control.
  • Forgives a Late Dose: A dose missed by a few days can simply be applied right away and the regular monthly schedule resumed without restarting.
  • Safe for Kittens from 9 Weeks: Approved for kittens as young as 9 weeks old that weigh at least 2 lbs.

Composition Table

Ingredient Quantity
Imidacloprid 40 mg (10%) per 0.4 mL tube
Moxidectin 4 mg (1%) per 0.4 mL tube

How to Use

Directions for Use

  • Prescription Required: Advantage Multi for Cats is an FDA-licensed prescription product obtained through or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.
  • Monthly Topical Application: Apply the full contents of one tube to your cat's skin once every 30 days, year-round, for uninterrupted protection.
  • Minimum Dose: Each monthly application delivers a minimum of 4.5 mg/lb (10 mg/kg) imidacloprid and 0.45 mg/lb (1 mg/kg) moxidectin.
  • Step 1, Open the Tube: Take one applicator tube from the package, hold it upright, and remove the cap.
  • Step 2, Break the Seal: Flip the cap over and press the opposite end firmly onto the tube tip, then twist to break the seal and remove the cap fully.
  • Step 3, Apply at the Base of the Head: Part the fur at the base of the head on the back of the neck until skin shows, press the tube tip directly onto the skin, and squeeze out the full contents in one spot before lifting the tube away.
  • Critical Application Location: The base of the head is the one spot cats cannot reach to lick; applying the product anywhere else raises the risk of ingestion during grooming.
  • Do Not Apply to Irritated Skin: Never put this product on skin that is broken, inflamed, or already irritated.
  • Ferret Dosing: Only the 0.4 mL Orange Box should be used in ferrets; the Turquoise Box under-doses and the Purple Box risks a serious overdose in ferrets.
  • For Cats Over 18 lbs: Your veterinarian will advise on which tube sizes to combine to reach the correct total dose for cats over 18 lbs.
  • Missed Dose: A forgotten dose can be given the moment you notice; just carry on with the monthly schedule from there and never apply two doses close together.

Disclaimer: This dosage information is provided by the manufacturer. Always consult your veterinarian before administering or adjusting any medication for your pet.

Additional Information

Precautions

  • Sick or Debilitated Cats: Do not use on sick, underweight, or debilitated cats; excessive lethargy has been noted in older or compromised animals in this category.
  • Never Administer Orally: This product must never be swallowed; every cat studied that ingested a full dose developed hypersalivation, vomiting, and poor appetite for at least one day.
  • Prevent Licking for 30 Minutes: Stop your cat from licking the treated area for at least 30 minutes; separation for up to 24 hours may be needed in multi-pet homes.
  • Keep Children Away: Children should not touch the treated area for at least 30 minutes after the product has been applied.
  • Never Use Dog Formulation on Cats: The dog version contains 2.5% moxidectin, more than double the cat formulation; using it on cats at any weight can cause serious toxicity.
  • Minimum Age and Weight: Not suitable for cats younger than 9 weeks or under 2 lbs; for ferrets, effectiveness has not been confirmed in animals over 4.4 lbs.
  • Heartworm-Positive Cats: Adverse shock-like reactions have been reported in some heartworm-positive cats; testing before starting is advisable at your veterinarian's discretion.
  • Multi-Pet Households: Cats that groom recently treated dogs can ingest enough of the higher-concentration dog product to develop adverse neurological reactions; keep them apart after dosing.
  • Human Safety: This product has been known to irritate human skin and eyes; make sure to wash up well with soap and water each time you apply it.
  • Do Not Apply to Irritated Skin: Never apply to broken, inflamed, or already irritated skin.

Possible Side Effects

  • Expected Cosmetic Effects: Stiff hair, a damp appearance, or a light powdery residue at the treated spot are normal cosmetic effects and do not need veterinary attention.
  • Application Site Reactions: Persistent inflammation, significant itching, hair loss, skin redness, or progressive scabbing at the treated area should be assessed by a veterinarian.
  • Hypersalivation: Excessive drooling is the most commonly reported post-approval reaction and usually results from licking the treated area rather than true toxicity.
  • Digestive Upset: Vomiting, reduced appetite, and diarrhea have been reported in some cats after treatment.
  • Lethargy and Depression: Reduced energy and low mood have been reported and may be more noticeable in older or underweight cats.
  • Behavioral Changes: Hyperactivity, hiding, excessive grooming, agitation, and behavioral changes have been noted in some cats after treatment.
  • Neurological Reactions: Trembling, loss of coordination, and tremors have been reported and may point to moxidectin-related effects that need immediate veterinary attention.
  • Death (Rare): In rare cases death has been reported following use; a direct link to the product could not always be confirmed.

Storage Information

  • Temperature Range: Room temperature storage works fine; just make sure the product does not go below 4°C (39°F) or above 25°C (77°F).
  • Keep Away from Children and Pets: Store this prescription product somewhere children and other animals simply cannot reach to prevent accidental exposure.
  • Do Not Use Past Expiration Date: The expiry date is printed on the bottom edge of the package; never use the product after this date has passed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What parasites does Advantage Multi (Orange) protect cats and ferrets against?

Ans: Advantage Multi Orange delivers 5-in-1 protection for cats, covering adult fleas, flea infestations, heartworm disease, ear mites, roundworms, and hookworms. For ferrets, it covers heartworm prevention and flea control. It does not protect against ticks or whipworms in either species.

Q2: How does Advantage Multi for Cats differ from Advantage Multi for Dogs?

Ans: Both contain imidacloprid and moxidectin but are not interchangeable. The cat formulation contains 1% moxidectin while the dog version contains 2.5%, more than double the concentration. Applying the dog product to a cat, even at a similar weight, can cause serious moxidectin toxicity. Always use the product labeled specifically for cats.

Q3: Can the Orange Box be used in ferrets and are there any restrictions?

Ans: Yes, the Orange Box is the only Advantage Multi for Cats size approved for ferrets weighing at least 2 lbs. The Turquoise Box under-doses ferrets and the Purple Box risks overdose. Effectiveness in ferrets over 4.4 lbs has not been confirmed. Always check with your veterinarian before treating a ferret.

Q4: My cat groomed itself after application and is now salivating heavily. What should I do?

Ans: Drooling after licking the treated area is the most commonly reported reaction and is usually caused by the bitter taste of imidacloprid. Every cat studied that ingested a full dose experienced hypersalivation, vomiting, and reduced appetite for at least one day. Contact your vet promptly if symptoms are severe or if tremors or incoordination appear.

Q5: Is Advantage Multi (Orange) safe to use if my cat already has heartworms?

Ans: Cats over 6 months may be tested for existing heartworm infection before starting treatment at the veterinarian's discretion. While no adverse reactions were seen in a controlled study of heartworm-infected cats treated at the label dose, a general risk of shock-like reactions exists in infected animals starting prevention products. Your vet should assess individual risk before beginning treatment.
